Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) involves continuous skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the baby and exclusive breastfeeding. Keeping the mother and baby together from birth, without separation; this helps to regulate the baby's heart rate, temperature, and stress levels, while improving survival rates, breastfeeding, and mother–baby bonding.
It has been proven to be a method that enhances the survival and well-being of newborns through continuous skin-to-skin contact and exclusive breastfeeding.
In this study, Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (iKMC), we emphasize the immediate initiation of KMC; implemented within "the first 24 hours after birth" to ensure that preterm or low birth weight infants receive necessary care as soon as possible.
Study Purpose:
By identifying the best practices for immediate KMC implementation, this research aims to establish it as a standard of care, thereby contributing to improved newborn outcomes and enhanced neonatal survival.
The iKMC-IR project is a strategy that has reduced infant mortality to 25% nationwide. KMC has been around for a long time, as far back as 1979. The name KMC was coined by Dr. Rey and Dr. Martinez in Bogota, Columbia, where it was developed as an alternative to inadequate and insufficient incubator care for those preterm newborn infants who had overcome initial problems and required only to feed and grow.
For decades, coverage was not what you would expect, it was not reaching those who were in need. Hence, the iKMC-IR project was initiated to ensure that the benefits of KMC are extended to all newborns in need.
The primary goal of the iKMC-IR project is to increase the number of infants who receive immediate KMC, while ensuring that they receive necessary medical care in the special newborn care unit (SNCU/NICU). This project has been implemented in 34 countries, with a total of 13,000 infants receiving immediate KMC.
This infographic highlights the benefits of immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), which has been proven to significantly reduce neonatal mortality and improve health outcomes through prompt KMC interventions.
"Thanks to the immediate kangaroo mother care provided by our local hospital, my baby received the necessary care needed to survive and thrive. I am forever grateful for the compassion and expertise of the healthcare team."
"After a challenging birth, I was overwhelmed with fear for my newborn's life. However, thanks to the immediate kangaroo mother care intervention, I witnessed a rapid transformation in my baby's health. Within hours, my child began to stabilize, and the nurturing care provided by the dedicated medical team gave us hope. iKMC not only saved my baby's life but also restored our faith in compassionate healthcare."
